Are there any Polynesian Dance Teachers in the U.K

I have tried with very little success to find a Hula/Tahitian dance teacher, i have been BellyDancing for 18 months and am looking for another dance form to compliment, i have seen Polynesian Dancers only on T.V but i love the way they move, and the stories they tell with their hands.
I would be really gratefull if anyone knows of any classes, or Instructors in the U.K preferably close to London

Tahitian hips/bellydance question

Okay, I saw a youtube of (the bellydance troupe) Unmata not too long ago and was impressed with what they call "tahitian hips." My question is, is this the same thing as fast Umi's in belly dance? I know I can do real fast Umi's that become a shimmy, and it looks pretty much the same to me. Are there any differences? Thanks! :O)

Right now I am currently looking for ideas .... I have a Mahu Pageant here on the East coast that I am running for. I am Vying for the Title Miss Gay Rhode Island 2009. For the talent portion I have decided to share my culture with the East Coast... Spread the Aloha!
As a keiki I have danced hula all through out high school as well. I have not danced in a few years but I do recognize the basic steps to get me by.
For my talent I want to open with a traditional Auana dance With English and Hawaiian Language then merge into a Tahitian number ..... The transition has to match and flo with the number.
Any one got have Ideas? Please hit me ASAP :)
The pageant is coming up in a few months and i have to Have chosen a number by the end of this month..... I need help...please

Hula sale....

I'm saying it here & now...
....my hula days will permanently take a back burner. I will only do what I know and not take it any further.
After many starts, I found that my love for Belly Dancing is far above Hula. I will not do any hula-specific or fusion shows....but that does not bar me from a special appearance. It's just I will not be performing hula on a regular basis.
I still love hula, but with the time commitment, and most importantly the commitment to the traditions of hula, I do not wish to alter it to my bellydance lifestyle. I strongly am opposed to fusing this beautiful art form. Hula is a culture, it's a way of life that is meant to be preserved.
Middle Eastern Dance is in the most part, progressive....it changes, you even see other cultural influences within the folk pieces....Bellydance can fit into any category. Hula cannot. I would do it regularly, but my daughter has lost interest in the art and will continue to concentrate in her aerial arts and violin.
I will sell off our pieces in hula that I know I will not need any longer. Before I post it on my superstarbeads tribe or Ebay them, I'll list them here if you or anyone you know has an interest in them....All the items listed here are in superior condition.

Dance lessons in tahiti?

Hi all,

I have always been drawn to Tahiti (and the polynesian islands), and have still not gone and would really love to visit next year for a long stay to learn the dance. Does anyone know how or where i would learn and if it is even possible for me to do so. I have learnt bellydance for 4yrs now and have always wanted to try a polynesian style and the tahitian tamure really appeals for its energy!

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance is hosting a workshop in Ori Tahiti, the dance of Tahiti. This introductory workshop features Ori technique (including hip isolations, footwork, and gestures), live drumming, as well as instruction in ‘ote‘a (a dance routine performed to the accompaniment of Tahitian drums).

Tahitian Sheet Music or other notation...

Greetings!

My name is Chip, and I am a drummer for the Tahitian dance troupe "Mou'a Vahine", based in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

We are looking to expand our repertoire of live music into more than just ote'a, and to do this we need sheet music or other musical notation for traditional Tahitian music

The first song we are performing is 'Toere oe no Tahiti'...we are currently performing a capella with drums, but adding melody instruments will make it much better (a capella singing is not my strong point, but I just can't say no to our leader!).

So, can anyone help me out with a source for sheet music for Tahitian songs?

I definitely appreciate it!

These are the questions at the heart of "A Walk by the Sea", the concert and the CD by Mahealani Uchiyama. We will offer a special concert version of "A Walk by the Sea" at Oakland’s Regents' Theater on the campus of Holy Names University.

Dance, music, story telling, ceremony and celebration featuring multi-cultural performances from the Pacific Islands, Native America, Africa and India.

The concert also coincides with Mahea's 50th birthday celebration!

A "Walk by the Sea" was last performed on Saturday, September 23rd, 2006 to a standing ovation at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts.

This will be the final performance of "A Walk by the Sea".

Where to go...where to go...??

Hello everybody. I'm seeking quality instruction in the dances of Polynesia especially dances fromTahiti in the Chicago area. There are at least a handful of teachers and programs here but I don't know who is teaching the dance within its full cultural context, respectfully and who is active on the hula dance scene because I have performed a lot in the past and if I get competent enough I would like to perform. Any guidance is *most* appreciated.

The season of Makahiki is upon us!

The purpose of Makahiki is to celebrate the traditional Hawaiian New Year with chants, protocols, ho`okupu, and sharing. It is open to all `ohana, individuals, halau, and hui.

However, if you are interested in participating, you must attend an orientation session to learn the protocol and chants.

Halau KaUaTuahine will have an orientation session on Thursday evening, October 11th at 7:00PM. The session will take place at the Center for International Dance, 729 Heinz Avenue in Berkeley, California.

Aloha! Hi all. My friend and I are looking for Polynesian Dance classes in my area. I live in Pasadena, CA and noticed their was one in particular on the west side, but would love to have one closer to home. I have ALWAYS been interested in the dance and took some privately for a month until my instructor was so tied up with performing she couldn't do it anymore. My goal is to actually be able to perform it live one day (even for a small group of friends)!

Fan dance?

Has anyone heard of using fan dancing in any polynesian cultural dance? I recently went to a student showcase luau where one dance was choreographed using a combination of fan dancing and tahitian dancing. The fans were not like Asian style, or European style fans or ones you might see a belly dancer use, but non-flashy, natural colored, spade shaped fan. Im not really sure how else to describe it. But has anyone heard of using fans in any island culture dance? It might seem natural because of the weather, but i have never seen a dance like that. Im not saying it's a bad thing, but it would be nice if i could find some cultural context to it. I thought the dance was really cool, and i would like to use something like it, but only if there is cultural context of it in polynesian dance.

Ive been a polynesian dancer for ten years, dancing hula, tahitian, somoan, maori, and philipino dances. Leo Hone

The paintings of Hawai'i artist (from 1970 -1979), Shari
Keleohoneakekahuli Martens Magno, are hanging in many countries
throughout the world, among them Denmark, England, Australia, Germany
and Canada. While painting was her first love, music became equally
important. Two years after the Alberta government aired a documentary
on her work as an artist, she laid aside her career in painting to
pursue musical studies. Artist and musician, Leohone holds a Master of
Arts degree from Norwich University in Vermont and a Fellowship degree
in Organ Performance from Trinity College of Music, London, England.
From 1982 onwards, she performed organ recitals extensively across
Canada and the Western U.S. until she retired from the concert scene
to Hawaii in 1989. Once settled, she inevitably found her way back to
her first love and has answered her call to paint.

Leohone is the hanai daughter of Paulie Keakealani Jennings, Executive
Producer of the World Invitational Hula Festival, E Ho'i Mai I Ka Pika
Hula. She is presently the Organist/Choirmaster at St. Peter's
Episcopal Church in downtown Honolulu and the Choral Director for the
Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club Chorale. She paddles with Anuenue
Canoe Club in Waikiki.

Caroline Young: In classical Oriental painting, artists approach
their work the way pianists in the West might approach the existing
compositions of the great masters. Each new painting was a
performance that the artist rehearsed for by practicing the
performance of earlier painters. Contemporary artist Caroline Young
took that wisdom to heart. Her delicate watercolors on silk pay
homage to classical Chinese technique called the "delicate style,"
and the lessons she learned from her mentor, Lam Oi Char. Each is a
virtuoso celebration.

im new here in san diego. well, not really new. ive been back and forth a couple times within the last year. but now im here for good for the time being. been here about 3 months. originally from hawaii (LAIE). danced, drummed, did music at PCC. looking for a group to become apart of out here in san diego. getting homesick. i miss performing and being apart of something good.
any suggestions would help me out alot!

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.

For those who appreciate hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his
talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance.

Caroline Young: In classical Oriental painting, artists approach
their work the way pianists in the West might approach the existing
compositions of the great masters. Each new painting was a
performance that the artist rehearsed for by practicing the
performance of earlier painters. Contemporary artist Caroline Young
took that wisdom to heart. Her delicate watercolors on silk pay
homage to classical Chinese technique called the "delicate style,"
and the lessons she learned from her mentor, Lam Oi Char. Each is a
virtuoso celebration.

The Independence Struggle Of Hawai'i

Families forced from their homes...live military ordnance left to
explode near schools and homes, maiming or killing the occasional
civilian...huge Stryker vehicles rolling relentlessly over a fragile
landscape as the United States imposes an alien, imperialist
government that brings oppression, genocide and ecological
destruction to the local population and environment...

Iraq? A'ole! No! These are current conditions in the so-called
"state" of Hawai'i. Visitors to Hawai'i, and those who settle there
from the mainland, often remain blissfully unaware of the true
history of this place. Or if they begin to hear a bit about it,
consider the American occupation as a "done deal" and go about their
business.

The worst public health statistics in the region...the lowest
education level...the highest incarceration rate...the most
poverty...the most children in foster care...the most people without
homes...families and communities torn apart by drugs imported by
organized crime...

Typical inhabitants of any American inner city? Nope! They are the
original inhabitants of "America's Vacation Paradise:" they are the
"kanaka maoli," the Native Hawaiians.

A small country with a vibrant spiritual culture forcibly overthrown
by a superpower bent on conquest for military and economic
reasons...the people forced to assimilate foreign ways contrary to
their basic values, denied access to their culture, history and even
their language...a Diaspora of exiles...a struggle for de-occupation
and the re-establishment of their government and sovereign status...

Tibet in 1959? Guess again. It's the Kingdom of Hawai'i, which was a
modern constitutional monarchy and declared neutral nation engaged in
treaty relationships with over fifty other countries - violently
seized in 1893; illegally annexed by the United States through a
domestic resolution; forced into "statehood" in 1959 in violation of
United Nations rules... Given an "apology" for all this by the
Clinton administration in 1993...

A bit of history: on January 17, 1893, Queen Lili`uokalani was forced
from her throne by American businessmen and business-minded
missionary sons, with the help of John L. Stevens, the American
Minister to the Hawaiian Kingdom, and the American navy. The
overthrow was violent, unjustified, insulting, and in complete
violation of international law. U.S. President Benjamin Harrison
apparently gave unofficial encouragement to the conspirators in 1892
and after the overthrow he presented their annexation petition to the
U.S. Senate. But incoming President Grover Cleveland was appalled. He
withdrew the petition before the Senate could act, called for an
investigation, and issued a powerful statement to reinstate the queen
and the rightful government. But the treasonous provisional
government refused to comply. President Cleveland was also opposed by
powerful interests within the United States who were loathe to part
with their juicy prize.

In 1897, approximately 21,000 Hawaiians - more than half the adult
Hawaiian population - signed and presented a petition protesting
annexation to the United States. Congress ignored them. Despite the
petition evidence to the contrary, it was far more lucrative for
Congress to accept the assurances of missionary lobbyists who claimed
the Hawaiians were eager for annexation.

This "Ku'e Petition" of resistance to annexation - 556 pages long,
and possibly one of the most significant documents of protest in
American, as well as Hawaiian, history - was buried deeply in the
U.S. National Archives until it was found by Noenoe Silva in 1998,
over a hundred years later. The discovery of the petition, and the
exhibition of this document by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, had an
enormous impact on the kanaka maoli, who searched the pages eagerly
for the names of their grandparents and great-grandparents. As Silva
puts it, "The petition, inscribed with the names of everyone's
kupuna, gave people permission from their ancestors to participate in
the quest for national sovereignty. More important, it affirmed for
them that their kupuna had not stood by idly, apathetically, while
their nation was taken from them."

Now, not every Native Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian is a sovereignty
activist working toward restoration of the kingdom. Many have
adjusted to colonization and consider themselves Americans. At most,
they may be supporters of the dangerous Akaka bill, thinking to
preserve Hawaiian "entitlements" through a federal recognition
process that will turn them into the equivalent of American Indians.

But there are many others who recognize the bill for what it is - a
way to finalize the land grab of the Kingdom and take title of
contested kanaka maoli lands once and for all - and who are
vigorously opposed to the bill. They do not consider themselves
"American" and continue to insist upon being recognized as subjects
of the Kingdom. As one man put it to me, when I asked him about his
livelihood, "I work for the Queen." In other words, he has devoted
the rest of his life to the restoration of his country. He is not
alone.

It is easy for people from the mainland to ignore or dismiss the
history of Hawai'i, yet the illegal occupation of Hawai'i continues
to have a huge detrimental effect on the people, the environment and
the culture. The struggle for Hawaiian independence is a long
standing, bitterly fought cause which deserves wider recognition and
support from the rest of the world. Free Hawai'i, now.

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.
